Brahms’ String Sextet No. 1 was his first chamber work for strings without piano, composed during a period of emotional upheaval involving Clara Schumann and a brief engagement to Agatha von Siebold. At the same time, he was grappling with his First Symphony, a project so daunting it took over 20 years to complete. Nearly a century earlier, Mozart, inspired by travels through Mannheim and Paris, sought to break free from Salzburg’s constraints and explore new musical forms. His Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, written in 1779, reflects this spirit of innovation, though it wasn’t published until 1802. That same year, the work gained popularity and inspired several arrangements, including a string sextet version published anonymously in 1808. This adaptation allows each instrument in the ensemble to shine, offering a fresh perspective on Mozart’s dialogue between soloists.
