Praised for her “musical maturity and masterful technique” (Leipziger Volkszeitung), Korean-born violinist Soo Yeon Kim is a recitalist, teaching artist, and a speaker — she is regularly invited on concert stages throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. As a soloist, chamber musician, and an orchestral player, she has appeared in renown venues such as Alice Tully Hall, David Geffen Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Lincoln Center, Stern Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., as well as in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan, and South Korea. As a devoted and passionate educator, she frequently gives masterclasses and workshops across the country, expertizing helping students and professionals achieve ease and restore the joy of playing through an active mind-body connection.
Dr. Kim is two-time first prize winner of the Concerto Competition at Juilliard’s Pre-College and is the first prize winner of the Concerto Competition at Eastman School of Music. Since her solo Lincoln Center debut at the age of 13, she has been selected as a young artist and a violin fellow in major music festivals including the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies at Juilliard, Aspen Music Festival-Conducting Academy, Kronberg Academy and Leipzig Internationale Sommer-Musikakademie in Germany, and Holland Music Sessions in the Netherlands. As an avid chamber musician, Dr. Kim worked with the leading composers of her generation and eminent artists, namely the late Peter Serkin, Joseph Kalichstein, Timothy Eddy, and the members of American String Quartet, Emerson String Quartet and Juilliard Quartet. Her collaboration with the New Juilliard Ensemble at Lincoln Center’s Focus! Festival led to premiering works by world-renown living composers including Andrew Ford and Aleksander Lasoń, which were live-streamed on New York’s Classical Radio Station, WQXR.
She is a current Associate Professor of Violin and Viola, as well as the Director of the Summer String Festival at Houghton University in upstate New York, which is the university’s own summer string program she established in Summer 2024. Previously, she served on violin faculty and instructor positions at University of Rochester-Eastman, Carnegie’s Weill Institute, Thurnauer School of Music of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, Luzerne Music Center, Castle Rock Music Camp in Utah, Blue Mountain Music Camp in Maryland, and Killington Music Festival in Vermont. Aside from her collegiate and summer festival appointments, she teaches the violin privately in-person and online across the country and abroad. Her young and mature students have won prizes in regional and international competitions and have been admitted to both the collegiate and pre-college programs at top music conservatories and universities, namely Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes, Eastman, Harvard, Yale and Stanford, and Columbia.
Dr. Kim is a graduate of Juilliard (B.M. & M.M.) under the tutelage of Stephen Clapp and Sylvia Rosenberg on a full scholarship. In 2020, she earned her doctorate degree (D.M.A.) from Eastman, where she also minored in String Pedagogy and Music History on merit scholarships, studying with Robin Scott.
