SUMMARY:Distant Voices
DESCRIPTION:Felice Giardini\, once the toast of London’s concert halls\, turns inward with an intimate duet for two cellos\, a voice he would carry farther from home than he ever imagined\, all the way to Moscow. Bohuslav Martinů\, an expatriate in Paris\, laces his Serenade with the wit and folk rhythms of a Czech homeland he can only reach in memory. Franz Schubert\, in the last weeks of his life\, called his music “the product of my genius and my misery\,” and nowhere is that truer than in the String Quintet\, written as his health failed and left unheard by the world for twenty-two years. \n\nProgram\nFelice Giardini: Trois Pièces à deux Violoncelles \nBohuslav Martinů: Serenade No. 2 for Two Violins and Viola\, H. 216 \nFranz Schubert: String Quintet in C major\, D. 956 \nArtists\n\nJohn Vaida\, violin \n\n\n\nSofia Kim\, violin \n\n\n\nAmy Iwazumi\, viola \n\n\n\nEmilio Colón\, cello \n\n\n\nCara Elise Colón\, cello \n \nThis event is sponsored\, in part\, by a grant from the armature and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts\, a federal agency.

SUMMARY:Answering
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven opens his C major quartet\, Op. 59 No. 3\, in uncertainty\, a slow introduction wandering far from home before the Allegro arrives like a door thrown open and the finale replies with a headlong fugue. Two decades later\, in the year of Beethoven’s death\, an eighteen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn fell in love and immersed himself in Beethoven’s late quartets\, writing a small song called “Frage” in which a young man asks\, “Ist es wahr?” (is it true?) that his beloved waits for him beneath the vines. He built an entire quartet around that question and closed it by letting the song return\, an answer to the beloved and to the master who had taught him how to ask.\n\n\nJanuary 7\, 2027 at 7:00 PM\n \nHayfield House at Penn State Wilkes-Barre\n44 University Drive\, Dallas\, PA 18612 \n \nNo senior/student discount.
He built an entire quartet around that question and closed it by letting the song return\, an answer to the beloved and to the master who had taught him how to ask. \n\n\nJanuary 8\, 2027 at 7:00 PM\n\n\n\nSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church232 Wyoming Ave\, Scranton\, PA 18503 \n\n\n\nTickets available online and at the door \n\n\n \n \n \n \n Ticket Type\n Price\n Cart\n \n \n Answering Scranton | General Admission\n $20\n Add to Cart\n \n Answering Scranton | Senior/Student\n $15\n Add to Cart\n \n \n \n \n \n  \n \nProgram\n\n\n \nFelix Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 2\, Op. 13 Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet Op. 59\, No. 3\, “Razumovsky” \n\n\n \nArtists\n\n\n \nJohn Vaida\, violin \n\n\n \nArthur Moeller\, violin \n\n\n \nAmy Iwazumi\, viola \n\n\n \nErin Ellis\, cello
